I’m never the smartest person in any room, so please treat this with as much “duh” as it deserves, but surely those of us who lived through Britney Spears (and every incarnation before then) have to look at this Miley Cyrus thing with some jaded experience. Not with regards to affect, or that it isn’t exciting when pop music pushes boundaries even if they’re the same ones over again (or have been pushed further by less mainstream, normative artists), but just there were/are very powerful corporations behind both, shaping and designing to that affect and excite, and it is in their prime interest that we keep talking about them, using their stranglehold to make sure we do.
