Si Belle Et Inutile

Si belle et inutile – Lio

This is one of the songs that was not re-recorded for Suite Sixteen, even though it is one her best. I don’t really mind though. The further in i sink, the more Suite Sixteen seems like a dispensable novelty. It was the first stuff of Lio’s i (and i imagine a lot of other people) ever heard, and will always hold place in my heart because of that, but what is it: The Sage Comme Une Image and Mona Lisa singles and some anglicised hits with inferior Sparks production. And it doesn’t even have this song! I’m going to listen to it now.

Sage Comme Une Image

Sage comme une image – Lio

The video. 5 scenes, 5 outfits, 5 hairstyles. One for each part of the song. Three boys, three disposals of boys. Mirror effects, shoulder-shuffle dancing, nothing more. It’s my favourite video hers. It’s my favourite video of all time.

Je casse tout ce que je touche – Lio

Gah! Repeating days! I feel i should have posted just the song alone yesterday instead of the video and have that as its first impression. It is not the greatest performance, and something is lost putting it up stage like that – something sweet, something cyphering hopes and hearts, something pop. I understand why most people who go to top 40 acts’ concerts don’t mind if they lip sync to their own records. A dream is created on record – they want it fulfilled.

Je casse tout ce que je touche – Lio

I just found out this song has a video last night.

Yes, it’s not from Lio’s best era (this is all big hair, riding underwear and saxophones) but it is the only in concert live footage of her i have ever seen, and it’s for one of her best songs. What a lively show she puts on, singing near-out of breath half the time. This is a concession – live footage from around 1980-1981 would be a dream come true – but, still, it excites me like little else. To be there. I’d strangle that guy with his own binoculars.

Sage Comme Une Image

Sage comme une image – Lio

Because i don’t live in France or Belgium, the search for Lio records in my country has proven fruitless. And because i don’t have any of her records (YET!), everything i have of her’s is messily piled on this computer of mine. Also Lio has a lot of videos, as any successful pop star should, no matter how provincial. So imagine my panic finding this wonderful song’s video and not having a corresponding illegally housed mp3.

It’s because it was released as a standalone single between her first two albums, and the world only wants to remember things as albums. Anyway, crisis over – Sage Comme Une Image b/w Suite Sixteen now in my hands. Well not literally. I really need to take a record buying holiday to France. Or just a holiday to France. Or a holiday any place. France for the records, anyway.

Fallait Pas Commencer

Fallait pas commencer – Lio

Later Lio. From her third album, Pop Model, with its saucy cover and still quite fantastic songs, despite saxophone being everywhere. I think this might be the first non-Premier Album song i’ve had on here, and it is in all honesty an accurate representation of how much i listen to songs beyond that first album. I guess i do like it more – the synthesisers, the youth, the dorkiness – but everything i’ve heard i’ve loved so i should distribute that love more evenly. Makes sense.

My Top Twenty

My top twenty – Lio

…well here’s my top twenty, again, every one a hit and memory. Whoa-oh. Whoa-oh. A-yeah-yeah-yeah. A-yeah-yeah-yeah. I don’t think it has changed since.
