Miggy’s Delight

Miggy’s delight – The Hated

It’s labelled “?” on the back of the bootleg unreleased LP, but became Miggy’s Delight on the release of that godsend of an mp3 package a few years ago. As much as that was a miracle, with all it’s pressing issues (or at least on my copy, which probably explains why i was able to own it), it’s sound quality and that it was a bootleg with the money going to the misdirected places bootlegs make it go, this LP must have felt just as miraculous to people in the know in 1999.

The Hated’s whole career is full of rescues like that. The What Was Behind LP, the Awl tape, the Desmond Outcast and the Transplanted Heroes 7″, those aforementioned mp3’s, the eternally-coming discography boxset. All these songs at a time unheard and unknown, trickling out every five or so years to be the greatest gifts to the ardent; expanding to further perfection a band who humously had already released three of the greatest records (7″, 2×7″ and an LP) ever put together. To be without this song and all the others on the record but especially Flux, and then to one day have them… The world is a decent place sometimes. Now, is there anything else yet to come?

Every Song

Every song – The Hated

Not on their album called Every Song, but again from the What Was Behind LP. The words must have meant something to them, to keep them for the 3 or 4 years between the two recordings. Two perfect albums by what could be two separate bands but is so wonderfully one. This is the Hated i prefer, but if fate were as cruel as it could have been and we never had the chance to hear it, i still would have found everything in Every Song the album. Except maybe for how more amazing they are when sped to this tempo.

Never Is Always

Never is always – The Hated

The best thing about the Hated’s What Was Behind album, which i would list very highly among my most favourite ever (the correctly mastered, demo version of it at least), is that every song save for one explodes and hurtles along at the same tempo with the same beat unchanged, and the guitars just do their wonderful thing set to it. Over and over, every song. It’s a perfect formula so why try and mix it up? They don’t all sound the same, just seem to come from the same place, with the same resolve and urgency.

What was behind – The Hated

I missed two days because of school and work. Two songs. Both incredible, but one i should be more ashamed to say i think is incredible. The other i want my whole identity and essenceto be read in. Guess which? Maybe i should be ashamed of both.

What Was Behind

What was behind – The Hated

I want to start a band whose sole influence is the Hated’s What Was Behind album. No other band, no other Hated record. Just this. Two guitars, improper vocals, and this drumbeat that doesn’t ever change. Applications as comments. I also want to start a band solely influenced by the first three songs on the Chinkees side of their Lawrence Arms split. Again, you know where to find me.

Hey Mister

Hey Mister – The Hated

If i ever sacrifice enough of myself that my car becomes a willing, self-financed extension of me and the me i want to communicate to the world, my customised license plate would read “347-ACK”, as tribute to the Hated and this song. But then that would make me the Mister of the song’s title. Still, the high fives and honking passing cars i expect to receive with my new $200 plus an annual fee plates would make it all worthwhile.

Hey Mister

Hey Mister – The Hated

Another band i would be glad to live with their discography and their discography alone for the rest of my life, especially now that, thanks to the internet, it has nearly doubled in size with those demo songs made available and at the right speed. Maybe not so much as i would be with the Magnetic Fields, but i wouldn’t be suffering. One of the greatest bands ever, weird voice moans and all. This was the first song of theirs i ever heard.
