Self starter – Henry’s Dress

Amy’s songs are the best, but that seems so axiomatic and uninteresting to say, and it’s only a matter of degrees and all part of one beautiful tapestry, that honestly who out there has and lives by a preference between the two singers anyway? That person just does not exist.

Get Yourself Together

Get yourself together – Henry’s Dress

Get yourself together, it will be alright. I’ve been at the stage for a while now that almost any string of words will trigger a song in me. Songs not written for me, and not even suited to my the situation, but become anthems just the same. The next step would be actually to take advice from them instead of turning things i need to hear into things i can sing along to and ignore.

Not Today

Not today – Henry’s Dress

The small, perfect touch in this song is that bass slide. All of these songs are of the Bust ‘Em Green LP for some reason. It was their only album, following the good band template of a few EP’s, split releases, an album, then breakup. And this is the first Henry’s Dress song i’ve posted that is sung by Matt, not Amy. I really don’t have a preference; they’re a perfect pairing. Here’s their attractive selves playing this, Target Practice and Winter ’94 in a record store somewhere, somewhen.

Jimmy

Jimmy – Henry’s Dress

See? I spent yesterday listening to Henry’s Dress wishing i had found their records. Maybe if i had those records i might have been aware before today of the “ooh la la la” that follows everything in the song. It’s such a perfect touch. The years i’ve spent listening to them and i’ve never noticed it before. I think it’s my computer speakers. It’s a real generational marker that i need a stereo to listen to music on. And i need physical media from which to play it.

Self Starter

Self starter – Henry’s Dress

I was thinking the other night that Henry’s Dress might be my favourite band that i don’t actually own any records by. It’s with wishful thinking to overcome this that i went today to this time of the year’s record fair. No luck! What a surprise. I think i’ve already drawn most of the records that are ever going to float to this part of the world. A low day. What i did buy was:

7″
Unthinkable thought – Blood of Others
It’s a fine line – The Cannanes
Simple question – The Cannanes
William – The Cannanes
Living in fear – Groundwork
Jilted b/w Truly – Hazel
The negatives – Hood
Sorry for laughing – Josef K
Ain’t you b/w Heidi’s head – Kleenex
Tinnitus – Lifetime
Melt – MK-Ultra
White mice – The Mo-Dettes
Crystal crescent – Primal Scream
The Cannanes/Sleepy Township split

8″
Born Against/Man is the Bastard split

Zero Zero Zero

Zero-Zero-Zero – Henry’s Dress

That’s our emergency services number. I’m not sure what it is to Henry’s Dress. Amy sings this song and i assume plays the guitar, so that means it is Matt playing the drums. Listen – isolate if you can – to him playing his ride cymbal on this song. The way it crashes and washes, fading in and out like some hypnotic wave, moving between sonic range and some nauseating blur. How even with all the noise that Henry’s Dress made it is the loudest thing in this song. I’m not sure if it was intentional or if it just was a matter of playing style meeting recording quality. Regardless, i think this is my favourite ever drum performance.

Winter ’94

Winter ’94 – Henry’s Dress

Dummm dummm dum-dum-dummm. Try having that stuck in your head for four hours. It was quite wonderful, actually. Dummm dummm dum-dum-dummm. Possibly most fun thing you can play on guitar. Dummm dummm dum-dum-dummm. I love that they made a song out of that, though it should hold no surprise something so great could come from so little. Three people making such noise.
