I still don’t know what to think about this song. It’s not about enduring and gagging oneself in an abusive relationship. Is it? Nor is it mandating a natural order of unconditional subservience. IS IT?! Why would a woman like Tammy Wynette write about and abide something so horrible? If anything it’s about preserving the sanctity of home and family, and the disparity between those “male” and “female” worlds within. The female world moreso within, trapped, than the male. Some people like living in that mess.

This song means so much to so many people. I think too much to deride. Maybe. The hope and hopelessness of love and the structures in which we act out love.
