Record store – Gold-Bears

So i guess i can talk about it today. I think every Gold-Bears song has a part in it i don’t like so much. Not in any way that ruins the song, but… i don’t know. Gold-Bears write the kind of songs i would like to write if i ever were to be in a band. Or near enough. So i feel i have this kind of stake in their songs, halfway torn between paternalism and jealousy. If i weren’t so taken by them and wanting them to give me the very best songs, i could turn all twisted and petty from that jealousy, acting in some snarky glee that amounts to “ha ha you didn’t write the perfect song after all” when they don’t. Here, the bad part – the part i wouldn’t have written – is the da-da-da-da-da marching drum bit of the pre-chorus. The best thing about their songs is how they explode from the get-go and just propel along. This part does nothing but interrupt that. Why would you?

Of course, they found a way to be a band and write really good songs and go wonderful places with it all. Jerks. I would have made the songs a bit shorter. This is off the Clouberry Records 7″, not the Are You Falling In Love? album. If there even is a difference. If there is, it’s an important one.

Tally – Gold-Bears

I love songs where the verse is better than the chorus. Here’s one. Such a breathless, blissful thing, with wonderful phrasing to convince me i’m listening to something truly special, only to have everything tempered by some stock chorus. Not enough to completely ruin it, no. Maybe it’s for the best that it is a let down – a design. What do i know about songwriting? It was on everybody’s list of favourite songs from last year and everybody knows more about these things than i. I know enough to realise it’s a really good song and i like it. And also that it could be better.
