How Much More

How much more – The Go-Go’s

Even though it’s spread out over a couple of years and therefore not really noticeable, i think this is the song that has come up here the most. A fantastic song to wake up with. I should be jumping out of bed, ready to take on the day, instead of saying every 5 minutes “now!” and eventually crawling from it. A nice little window into my life. Sorry, Go-Go’s.

How Much More

How much more – The Go-Go’s

This song comes around a lot. It is probably my favourite Go-Go’s song. So it is with a great portion of the joy allotted to me for this life that i find out that there’s an earlier, pre-major label version on the We Got The Beat single on Stiff Records. Faster, thinner sounding, rougher vocals, a younger sounding band – my favourite song just got a whole lot better. I want to make this version my definitive version, the one i carry with me, the one always in my head.

Lust To Love

Lust to love – The Go-Go’s

Who’s your favourite Go-Go? Mine is Jane. I feel like any answer to that is like answering one of those teen girl magazine quizzes, and the result just as conclusive, revealing and binding as they always are. And i’m right to feel that. I guarantee if one were to go back and read teen magazines from 1980 you would find this question somewhere. I’m not sure if it’s that is a good or bad thing for the Go-Go’s, but they were a band of personalities, a band you could have a favourite member of.

Do you enjoy the spotlight or prefer to do your own thing off to the side? Are you creative? Do you wear your hair long or short? When bra shopping do you go inside the store or sit alone and contemplative in the car? I am Jane.

How Much More?

How much more? – The Go-Go’s

This song, as with so much new wave, is of a tempo, a beat, a secure, sunny way of looking at the world (regardless of the sometimes crestfallen and desperate songmatter), infectious and communal, so perfect and so conducive to dancing. Dancing. I can picture the kids, their positions in relation to one another, their moves, the concentration of their eyes, their clothes, their shoes. I can see it all. Sometimes i wish i grew up in the early to mid eighties, instead of the mopey time i did. The movies and music make it look so good.

How much more – The Go-Go’s

Yeah… To be a Go-Go… If i were to be able to choose just one band i could travel back in time and implant myself in their line up, their vision and accomplishments unchanged by my addition, it would be the Go-Go’s. I’m sure there are better bands, more exciting bands, more important bands, better suited bands, but right now, listening to Beauty and the Beat, i am not convinced. Fun, good times, inspiration – it’s the life. I probably would get annoyed by the preening and pressure of fame, especially the tokenness with which the Go-Go’s were treated, but to be a part of this:

…i can’t right now imagine anything better.

Our Lips Are Sealed

Our lips are sealed – The Go-Go’s

Oh, to be a Go-Go. If that life was accurately depicted in this song’s video, where all i had to do was drive around in a fancy car, go shopping for lingerie, then splash around the rest of the afternoon in a fountain, with four of the coolest girls who, be it crafted illusion for the camera or authentic, are the best friends one could have and are mine, then i dream for it like no other. It always bugged me that Jane Wiedlin is left to sit in the car while the rest of the band shop, and the only underwear we see in the whole film clip is her’s as she jumps in the fountain.
<p align="justify"?I guess it is her song, her's to sing "Hush, my darling…". Her in astral isolation, to preoccupied in love to realise the car has stopped and the others left. For closure, let's assume the loose end is tied up with Kathy, Gina, Belinda, and Charlotte not forgetting Jane in her pensive moment and buying her lingerie as a gift at a time she couldn't possibly – the very lingerie we see as she jumps into the fountain, and back into the revelry of being a Go-Go.
