Kashiko – Ushiroyubi Sasaregumi

Their final single. And not on either of the albums i own, so this took some tracking down. You know, i have been strictly honest with this thing. I could have used it to at least create the illusion of cool, selecting songs with some sort of useful capital, or songs about which i would at least have something to say. But here i am, stripped bare to whatever embarrassments my subconscious offers up in the morning. So eat it. This song has some of the most unnecessarily layered production to be found in any song, all of it extraneous to the music, and is all the more perfect because of it.

Dan Dan Akazukin – Ushiroyubi Sasaregumi

Ushiroyubi Sasaregumi deep cuts. An album song from their An balancing Toy LP. It sounds like Yuuyu sings most of this herself but i’ll have to check that. Something about Little Red Riding Hood, and it’s almost a punk song, with gang vocals and all. Not Onyanko Club backups, not even Wota chants, but actual gangs vocals that come integral to the song. They did a lot of style explorations, more than any other Onyanko related thing save for the perhaps the Club itself. And while i’d say everything they did was great, tell that to the me who turned this down out of embarrassment when the neighbourhood kids came home from school the other day.

Nekojitagokoro mo koi no uchi – Ushiroyubi Sasaregumi

The more i know the more i might be contradicting or making redundant what i’ve written earlier. All of Ushiroyubi Sasaregumi’s singles, A-side and B, were used as the opening and closing themes to High School! Kimengumi. In fact the reason the group was formed was because of Fuji TV coming to Akimoto Yasushi specifically for theme music. I just found it in its life outside of the anime, which i’m sure it always had. I should really watch High School! Kimengumi. The shojo stuff is for me. I was watching Yawara! A Fashionable Judo Girl and was in love with it before animecrazy shut down and left me in a lurch. Big anime fan here. No hope.

Ushiroyubi sasaregumi – Ushiroyubi Sasaregumi

Another theme song. Another J-pop song. Another Ushiroyubi Sasaregumi song. Their own theme, but also the theme to High School! Kimengumi, an anime. I’ve built up a very stubborn resistance to anime and so i don’t think i’ll ever watch this. It does look right up my alley, but i just can’t make that jump. There’s a finality in anime that i’m not ready to take. If there’s a live action version however…

Nagisa no『・・・・・』 – Ushiroyubi Sasaregumi

Apparently 『 and 』are the opening and closing quotation marks for the Japanese written language. It makes sense, for a language traditionally written vertically but now more often horizontally. But it leads me to ask the same thing i asked in French class when i found out about the « » Guillemets they use: How do they do air quotes?

Wazaari! – Ushiroyubi Sasaregumi

A Wazaari is a point score in Judo, scored when the opponent is thrown in a throw lacking one of the four required elements of an Ippon, or is held on the back for between 20 and 25 seconds on the mat. Two Wazaari accumulate to an Ippon and the bout is over. I always wanted to do Judo as a kid, but there was nowhere close enough that would teach it. Ho hum. No other martial art would do, so i never studied anything. I’m a sitting duck. The Olympic Games are on soon. The combat sports, weightlifting, diving and gymnastics are what i’ll be watching. I like sports.

Here’s a video of this song performed December 3rd, 1986, on Yuyake Nyan Nyan, with the rest of the Onyanko Club serving as back up dancers. An odd numbered Onyanko Club because someone at the back is made to dance by herself during the partnered bits. I think this song might have been #1 on the Oricon charts at the time. The audience mics were left on.

Wazaari! – Ushiroyubi Sasaregumi

A march song that makes me think all this is a Japanese turn at the Mickey Mouse Club. I don’t listen to many marches, but that’s because not many people write them. Maybe because they’re not ideal structures for pop songs, being above all marches, stunted to what that demands musically and conjures visually. There’s still a Ushiroyubi Sasaregumi song in here, in the way their voices work together and the way Yuyuu echoes Mamiko in the chorus. And it’s fun, Sousa obliggatos on synthesizers all over the place towards the end.

Nagisa no『・・・・・』 – Ushiroyubi Sasaregumi

Below is my favourite performance video of all performance videos. It’s from an episode of Yuyake Nyan Nyan – Onyanko Club’s (of which Ushiroyubi Sasaregumi were a splintered sub-group) television show – where through either a production idea that wasn’t thought through very well, or one of those weird, semi-sadistic punishments 80’s Japanese TV was fond to dish out, Ushiroyubi Sasaregumi are nearly drowned in a torrent of confetti that hails on them their entire performance. And i imagine sometime thereafter. I like it because it’s a great idea that quickly moves into the ridiculous, and all the while Mamiko and Yuuyu keep singing one of my favourite songs of theirs.
