If loneliness was art (acoustic version) – Allo, Darlin’

If you are a huge nerd like me and buy the superfluous Allo Darlin’ singles you can abate superfluousness and guilt somewhat by enjoying the various b-sides. To the My Heart Is A Drummer 7″, the b-side comes in the form of this pleasant, acoustic version of If Loneliness Was Art. It’s by no means essential, but it is nice to have. It is! Unless i’m under a spell in which i have to have everything and “nice to have” is a blindness, a justification, to compulsion.

If loneliness was art – Allo, Darlin’

…i could hang me from a wall. I get Allo, Darlin’ in my head a lot, and when it comes to getting them and all accompanying baggage out of my head and on to here – out of the personal and into the public, the visible – i sure do complain a lot. I cannot help it. I love them, but i cannot with good conscience let that love sit without reproach. Yes, this is me in pop music. Loneliness is not art. Loneliness is reprimanding others for their art… for things that aren’t really all that bad, just mildly disapprovable; for being something they aren’t and have no intention of being.

Emily

Emily – Allo, Darlin’

Even though i’m sure the timelines don’t match up between the release of this song and the event, i like to think that this song is about Emily from Betty and the Werewolves taking over Elizabeth from Allo, Darlin”s job playing guitar in Tender Trap – Tender Trap being the boyfriend, and those various markers of adequate tweeness listed the qualities one should possess if one should want to be in a band like Tender Trap. Otherwise it’s kind of lame (competition, male gaze and sought approval, etc.).

The Polaroid song – Allo, Darlin’

They could call this the Instax song, or even the Impossible Project song, but rest assured whatever else it could be, it would still bear a brand namedrop, referential and relatable.

The Polaroid Song

The Polaroid song – Allo, Darlin’

I’m completely aware of how grating and repulsive this music can be, and the faculties, expectations and prejudices one has to shut off to join the happy, carefree, well aligned, dancing masses, but when this song hits the “Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh-oh-oh” in its pre-chorus don’t think i am not completely disarmed, enamoured, everything wrong fixed enough where joining those masses becomes some crucial life/death decision, and i MUST join them, or come as close as i am allowed to. Liking music is a battlefield.

Dreaming

Dreaming – Allo, Darlin’

Song of the year for me, probably, if i don’t get over it by the year’s end. It really makes me feel good, wistful, normal, and connected to an undefined and often distant and restricted unassembled assembly of fun, carefree, in touch, mark-making, pretty young things. I don’t know why, but it is both an achievement and a personal asset that i love and can react appropriately to songs like this. It makes me feel as though i’m not as pathetic and lost as i think i am. I can be grounded. I need this to be my favourite song of the year.

I love it, even with the croony male vocals which this entire corner of the music world seems to have latched on to and determined this is how one should sing if one has male vocal chords. Who’s to blame? Stevie Jackson? Or an older model i’m oblivious to? The band name’s not all that great either.Yeah. Song of the year.
