Jounetsu Rainbow – Takai Mamiko

Doing this every day of the year, one of those is going to fall on my birthday, and this is my birthday song for 2012. A marker of where i am in my life, i don’t think there could be a more apt song. A marker musically, at least. The joy this song carries doesn’t fit so well. Birthdays…

Jounetsu Rainbow – Takai Mamiko

Because i’m running out of things to say about this song (although hopefully more expertise may come my way someday) here is a video of someone covering this song. She covers a lot of songs of the 80’s Japanese idol era and they do sound most excellent. My indie pop love interpreting my 80’s J-pop love. She seems to have moved on to more complex arrangements and multi-tracking nowdays, but this is all that’s needed, just her and her guitar. And with the guitar right up against the camera, you can follow and learn how to play along at home! I think she might be using a capo most of the time, though.

Jounetsu Rainbow – Takai Mamiko

Again?! It’s late. Have this advertisement for this song – either its single or the album it’s from. Or maybe something else entirely. Because i’m an absolute failure in selling anyone anything, see how the Japanese in 1987 were sold this song. Of course advertising doesn’t exist in a vacuum, and those prone to this were already studied and very much devoted to Mamiko, making it more than just a song playing over video edited footage of a girl on a pebble beach. Coming from there, it’s bound to be more successful than from some boring do-nothing telling a world he has long since lost the capacity to impress or affect just how much this song excites him.

Jounetsu Rainbow – Takai Mamiko

Is this the most joyous song ever written? I’m not going to try and think of one to relegate it, but i do have a fairly excellent offhand knowledge of songs in the “most joyous” catalogue and none of them beat this. The tempo, synth trills, and Mamiko’s voice and everything it captures – everything came together in 1987 in Japan to create something that soars on a plane of elation not possible before and not matched since. I’m not sure exactly what she is singing about, but let’s assume love and being quite happy with it. Waking up with this!

Cinderella tachi e no dengon – Takai Mamiko

A message to Cinderella. Takai Mamiko was Onyanko Club member #16 (i think she didn’t have to go through that audition parade but was discovered in the street. I might be wrong. I’m piecing this together), the taller half of Ushiroyubi Sasaregumi, and the member who would go on to marry Onyanko Club creator Yasushi Akimoto. Maybe as always i’m in denial, but it’s not as creepy as it seems. She was twenty-two, he thirty, the group was over, and it stemmed from a continuing working relationship. For all i can tell they’re still married. This was Mamiko’s first solo single.

edit: She did audition. Contestant number 2, got in with a score of 117. There’s just some footage of her in the street as an unknown carrying a red umbrella that i know is of consequence to her idol genesis story, but i’m not sure what it is. The world will probably end if i don’t find out.
