Fantastic Day

Fantastic day – Haircut 100

I get the feeling, context upheld, that Haircut 100 weren’t the coolest of bands to like. Like the tail of Orange Juice without the Postcard comet head to assuage, taking and testing some lame, collaborationist things. Fun music for those who find it particularly easy to ignore things. Thankfully, context removed, the substance, origin and point of music no longer being the fulcrum on which liking it rests, i don’t have to worry about that and can like Haircut 100 in the comfort of my own alienated sphere.

Love Plus One

Love plus one – Haircut 100

The last time i heard this song was Saturday night, driving home with my girlfirend from a beach and food adventure in the city. It came on, like near everything in my life, through shuffle, and i turned it up. Her ipod is full of music i put on there on the faintest of chances she might like some of it. She needs none of it. She knows what she likes. She knows herself how to get what she likes. But every now and then she finds something nice i leave for her.

Me turning this song up, securing attention to it, was an overt effort to say “Hey, i left something nice for you here.” This posting here is done entirely in the same spirit, with the same enthusiasm of song, and the same trepidation that everything i hope to transmit with this song, this moment, will fall to indifference. I couldn’t tell if she liked it or not. I didn’t ask.

Love plus one – Haircut 100

This is another song i became aware of first, or if not first then at a time germane for captivation, from staying up and watching Countdown. It really is funny becoming aware of these songs as then current or predicted hits with all the promotion, the disc jockey talk, and the momentary importance such talk gives to what often are simply flashes in pans, as though the consequence Molly Meldrum and others accord these songs week by week, shifting top 40 by shifting top 40, was permanent and every song were never to slip from public conscious. So many songs are forgotten. Love Plus One should be retained. It’s a wonderful song by a wonderfully named band.
