La bamba – Ritchie Valens

Spaghetti and meatballs, Kentucky Fried Chicken. I think there’s a whole cultural significance that i’m unaware of that i’ve completely reduced by writing that school yard verse. Not cultural significance of the song and its tradition in Latin culture, but significance in the immigrant experience; having this song, your song, your language, your heritage, your people, in their top 40. It was credited Ritchie Valens, not Ritchie Valenzuela, and became a rock’n’roll song, but still it’s an inroad, a place, an identity, something yours, something to rejoice in el Norte.
