Again – Kudo Shizuka

I’ve posted a number of Shizuka’s songs multiple times but this one only once. I can’t explain why, it’s one of my favourites. Here’s her singing it as the showstopper in a 1990 concert, which thanks to the Japanese adoption of laserdisc has been preserved pristinely for this youtube generation.

Mugo n Iroppoi

Mugo n Iroppoi – Kudo Shizuka

Watching Kudo Shizuka clips as i do, over and over, she tends to make mistakes a lot and it’s this song that she seems to mess up the most. I’m not sure why. I think it may have to do with the different ways it was truncated for live broadcast, and she losing her place in the mix. But no one laughs it off better than she, snapping out from her stage perfection to her goofy self and back in again.

Koi hitoyo – Kudo Shizuka

Again?! To abate the pain of Bullwinkle pulling this rabbit out of his hat, here’s a nice video of Shizuka singing this song live.

Mugo n Iroppoi

Mugo n Iroppoi – Kudo Shizuka

I also like this song a lot, despite it again sounding too much like end of the decade 80’s. Maybe i’m coming around to it. She can’t help the era she came up in, and she was perfect for it regardless.

Koi Hitoyo

Koi hitoyo – Kudo Shizuka

Dig that fretless bass, or the synthesizer approximation thereof. I spend more time with individual pop songs than i do whatever you’d class the other music i listen to. I guess that’s their purpose. Anyway, from Shizuka lately it has been constant immersion for me in this song. It is full of those late in the decade elements and instruments (like the aforementioned fretless bass) that have stood in the way of me liking certain songs before, and it’s a power ballad on top of that, but am i ever in love with it. Research tells me this song was used as a commercial for an open air museum in Hakone, which (the town, not the museum) is on my list of places to visit someday. I can’t remember why it is on there, but it is, and this song finding me disparately as it did just makes it seem fated. One day.

I tell you it’s been kinda liberating. I could have easily followed this slippery slope and completely given up on this thing, but, i don’t know, there’s this compulsion i have to it. And it’s really only for me. But now we’re settled, we have internet, school is on a mid-semester break, so i’ll continue.

Kousa ni Fukarete

Kousa ni fukarete – Kudo Shizuka

Have i posted this video yet? It’s nothing remarkable (though there is something cool about the band being wheeled on stage -everything coming from nothing), her usual flawless live performance. but it does get me out of straining to figure something to write about this song on a day i’m really too busy to. It’s good. One of her best.
