Search – Verbal Assault

My favourite pinch harmonics in any song. It’s just how amateurish it sounds: the sound of a young person in their bedroom, receiving music instruction from a stereo on high, imitating to become. More hardcore should be stripped as bare as this.

Scared

Scared – Verbal Assault

The promises made in hardcore and the window of time to see them out. What are the members of Verbal Assault doing now and how do they feel about this, their youth and potency? Has nothing worn away, everything meaning as much as it ever has, as urgent, in the face of an adulthood in both reality and guise that doesn’t allow for it? It would be cool if it hadn’t.

Our Illusions

Our illusions – Verbal Assault

Did this style of hardcore ever make a comeback? Moshy, riffy, melodic, mid-paced, metal-influenced but not so much to fool anyone or it affecting anything more than little things the guitar does (no solos); emotions at the front, feeling things intensely, daring to break new grounds of corniness and being all the more incredible for it. Not youth crew, not emo, but the space in between. 1988-91. And do these bands put stills of The Seventh Seal on their record sleeves?

Scared

Scared – Verbal Assault

I think it might be easy to make fun of this song if for whatever reason you’re not open to it, especially the piano part. An easy, contrived reach for a greater grace than hardcore on its surface offers. But i just can’t fault a bunch of kids wanting that, and using what has until then come into their experience and scope as a way to find and express it. Wanting to create beauty, no matter how ersatz or clumsy, no matter how prosaic and cheesy, is nothing that should ever be taken away from someone. It works for me, now as much as when i first heard it.

Trial

Trial – Verbal Assualt

I had a dream just before waking up of the band playing this song live. I wasn’t there. Basically my dream was just clear vision of a live performance video, perfect but a complete fantasy. I’ve never even seen anything of Verbal Assault live, but i fabricated and visioned it precisely, each member and their role exact, and the song played note for note. Go me and my awesome dreams…

For the longest time all i knew of Verbal Assault, and all i could envision of how great they might be, was this photo i had of Pete Chramiec. He looked so cool. So cool. There he was, long hair, baseball cap on backwards, half smiling, holding a guitar so collectedly, philosophical almost, like no one i’ve ever seen. This was something new, something different. How could they not be a great band with this guy a part?
