You Do The Maths

You do the maths – Street Chant

I think i’ve fallen out of touch with Street Chant. I know they have toured here a bunch of times and i didn’t once see them, and they may have released a new single that i don’t own. I don’t even feel an urgency to run to a store and find it – an urgency i once had and still feel i should have. I’m of course as always wary of anything new, especially from bands i irrationally think have been taken from me by the evil hands of buzz and cool. It changes things, don’t deny it. Their demo was perfect. The only good songs from the album were those rerecorded from the demo. The slide has already begun. Or it hasn’t and i should have faith in things other than cynicism and pessimism.

Stoned Again

Stoned again – Street Chant

Their slower song that, while not terrible, never has clicked with me. On record i know it is coming up, and live i know they’re going to play it, and it’s hard for me to get excited about it. Something to endure. It’s a personal problem and i will seek help regarding it. I know it’s a personal problem because they’ve pulled it as the newest single from Means, complete with video. I trust that selection is a studied one, by committee. I trust my opinion is the wrong one.

Stoned Again

Stoned again – Street Chant

A song brought about by a dream. This happens often, i just don’t report them. Mostly because dream stories are mostly boring and unrelatable.

The dream was me somehow at some cool party, alone, and Street Chant were about to play. Overwhelmed, out of place, i turned away and hid behind a barrier to wait out another vital, fun and rewarding moment i couldn’t bear to experience. Meanwhile everyone else was having a ball, as rightfully they should.

It was about the time that they played this song (late into their set, which played real time as i dreamt it, i swear) frustration of myself and what i was making myself miss out on finally outbalanced the anxiety, and i peered my head out of my bunker. Emily was looking right at me and only me and waved the biggest, most friendly of waves – the kind i could only dream about. She was genuinely happy to see me, happy to know she was playing for me. I had base. I had a right to be there. I had what i needed.

There’s nothing to be read in dreams.

Scream Walk

Scream walk – Street Chant

Recent winners of the Critics Choice prize at the New Zealand Music Awards, current sport for internet flack and message board scorn, and probable winners of my favourite album released this year, it’s Street Chant. Means is so great. It’s most of the songs on the tour EP and those other songs i’ve heard live, so i was predisposed to love it. Unless they were to screw it up somehow with recording or restructuring or something, there wasn’t much chance i wouldn’t. I will follow this band as high as their star should shoot.

Their album is out now on Arch Hill Recordings, and yeah it’s expensive… but what are you going to do? And for the first time ever i’m actually using my free mp3 download card (does anybody want like a shoebox worth of these things?) to retrieve this version of the song (for preview purposes) and not the EP version. It’s a rerecording i have no crisis of dissonance with. Such a great band…

Less chat, more sewing – Street Chant

\ˈstrēt chänt\

This is one of those songs where the chorus is so, so good and you want so much for it to come back again – it should come back again, all pop sensibility and appeasement of the listener demand that it come back again – only to find, after the breakdown, after every other great direction the song goes, at the perfect moment, it just ends. Ugh. There’s a button that looks like this: |<<. This is probably my favourite Street Chant song.

Scream Walk

Scream walk – Street Chant

Such a great band. And another band i can directly attribute me finding out about and getting into to Lawrence. I know i don’t get out as much as i should and any judgment i make on this subject comes from severely limited scope, but their show at Repressed Records earlier this year, on a lazy, lazy Sunday afternoon, was one of my favourites of recent times.

Street Chant have just finished and released to the world a video for this song, which i saw for the first time last night. An explanation for it being in my head. It’s alright, not bad, it’s ok. They look like they’re having fun – something i imagine an impossibility not to be when in such a band. It is set to a different recording than the one i’ve offered here. Due to familiarity, i prefer the tour EP version – any deviation from that recording is going to be distracting and irksome to me. Still, it’s a great song, and if by any chance they google search their name, wade through the twenty or so pages of results to find one linking here and read this, a message: Please come back to Australia again. Perhaps play Melbourne or another city more receptive and appreciative of you next time, but at least one show in crummy Sydney, on a night or afternoon i have off from work. Please. Thank you.
