Set Me Free

Set me free – Fastbacks

I feel so dumb. For years i’ve felt that the Fastbacks’ first album would be a thing of perfection if not for some weird shift and fall off during the last three songs, of which this one is in the middle. The first seven are this incredible continuous run of better and better songs, and then something happened, like they ran out of them and had already made too many EP’s. Kept to seven song it would be among my most favourite albums ever, but it’s not and i just turn it off after You Will Be The One and pretend it is. Well today in research for this i found this song’s ill-fittingness is due to it being a Sweet song. All these years… I just thought they were playing at writing a rockin’ song, but they were just playing at being the Sweet. That doesn’t explain the songs on other side of this, though. Maybe they’re covers as well. I still think i’ll turn this album off after the seventh song. It just feels better. I like this song more now.

The Light’s On You

The light’s on you – Fastbacks

There’s this thing about Kurt Bloch’s guitar playing with the Fastbacks, especially on their first album, where it seems so excessive and anomalous to the music underneath that i imagine it being not part of the original recording at all, but rather the result of someone so familiar with the Fastbacks and the guitar, living and breathing both, just playing over the top of the record in their room. From a mix of bedroom boredom and elation come these liberties, still wholly reverent to the music yet apart from it as well, that sound like someone’s one wish to be a part of the group. It would not be the same without it.

In The Winter

In the Winter – Fastbacks

My go to it’s-too-cold-out-so-let’s-lie-in-bed-longer mind-wandering song, it turns out. It’s never as cold as i think, and i feel ashamed for thinking it and being as lazy as i am. The Fastbacks were not a lazy band. They are not a band for lazy people.

The Light’s On You

The light’s on you – Fastbacks

There’s a moment in this song around two and a half minutes in when it comes to the line “and keep it all safe inside” that might be the Fastbacks’ most glorious moment. It takes it from a three minute song to a four minute one, and for once that’s not a band thing. “Insiii-iii-iiide.” Kim and Lulu’s voices in their concert, ascending with each drawn out syllable. It happens four times over four bars and never again, but it’s enough. Yeah… Listen. You’ll hear it.

In The Winter

In the Winter – Fastbacks

Our Winters are pathetic. Although i live in one of the colder parts of this country, it’s nothing to hole up away from. Complaining about the cold seems such an affront to those who live long, dark months trapped inside with snow-covered streets, frozen lakes, bare trees bending under the weight of ice – real Winters. Winters that necessitate infrastructure to deal with: Snowplows, salt, antifreeze, tire-chains, furnaces, floor heating, long johns, the warmest of coats. Our stupid house doesn’t even have insulation.

Still, with the wind the way it has been the last few days forgive me if i don’t leave the house. Of course it’s gone now and it’s a beautiful day today, so i’ll have to find other excuses for staying inside.

Seven Days

Seven days – Fastbacks

Again with the Fastbacks? Their first album, on which this is the first song (and yesterday’s the second), might be one of my favourites of all time. It is just everything i want, done at levels so perfectly and wonderfully excessive. Even towards the end, where the songs go places unsought and unexpected from the album’s beginnings, it’s still something great. And not only this first album. Everything.

And again with Kurt Bloch! Pop punk with dive bombs!
