All i want for Christmas is you – Mariah Carey

’tis the season. I’m subject to these songs more than most, and every year there are so many new ones. Certain economic factors dictate it. They are not hopeful songs. They are intended to stir something in the few weeks preceding Christmas – a want for the sentiment they carry and to make that sentiment purchasable – tied to the season and no time after; no Christmas after. They are songs of planned obsolescence (and contract obligation), destined to be forgotten after its one and only sales push, replaced with next year’s crop. It takes something special for one of these songs to move into the Christmas canon: to mean something beyond the one Christmas that spurned it. To be remembered and to stir something more than a fleeting impulse to buy. To be an actual Christmas song. This is one of the very few that has become one.
