A Friend For Life

A friend for life – Boyracer

Hooray a Boyracer song, and a Boyracer song i haven’t posted before. Boyracer bass lines are the best and this is the bass line that opens up their very first album, More Songs About Frustration And Self Hate. It’s an album title that fits me to a T but i’ve never been sure if the “more” in it refers to a continuation of the bands output, or if it was in response to the larger mopey music climate of the time (1994). So Boyracer released albums. A few of them actually, though not as many as their EP’s, splits and compilation releases so sometimes they get lost, shuffled in the mix. Or at least they should, in a world that values the 7″ records as much if not more highly as the approved LP. It’s the world we live in i guess. At least the only difference between Boyracer’s albums and their other stuff is that there are just more songs on them. So more of the best songs ever written.

I tell you it’s been kinda liberating. I could have easily followed this slippery slope and completely given up on this thing, but, i don’t know, there’s this compulsion i have to it. And it’s really only for me. But now we’re settled, we have internet, school is on a mid-semester break, so i’ll continue.

Vitamin B

Vitamin B – Boyracer

There must be some Boyracer songs that Stewart cannot remember writing. The amount of them and the stretch years and releases they are strewn over, if he ever listens to his old records there must be some songs that make him go “Really? Me?” I might have a better handle on his work than he does. He does have bigger concerns now than an encyclopaedic knowledge of his discography, sadly (sad concerns, not sad that his music is not the main priority in his life). It’s strange to feel for someone you’ve never met. No it’s not, it’s human.

One step forward – Boyracer

I know this was originally an Even As We Speak song, but, to completely preclude the best chance Even As We Speak had of appearing here (or another Australian band appearing here), it’s the Boyracer version in my head. And i know there was actually a version of this recorded in a studio that wasn’t Maida Vale, but i’ve definitely the Peel Session version up here. I am such a nerd that i can tell. At least i think i can. It would be quite embarrassing for me if they were to be the same recording, the difference lying in the medium i’m hearing it on. Quite embarrassing indeed. I’m pretty sure i’m right. It’s the backing vocals and the way Stewart says “go, Nic, go” instead of “go, Matt, go.” A great song, whichever way it’s done.

West Riding House

West Riding House – Boyracer

I want to write songs like Boyracer did. I want to find songs in what Boyracer found, making songs from what Boyracer made, let songs be as Boyracer let them, knowing these are songs, and perfect songs at that.

Beautiful Lines

Beautiful lines – Boyracer

I need to be in an active band so, so very much. My itch at the moment (like at this very moment. This time of writing. There are many itches in many places) is Boyracer. I want to start a band whose sole influence is Boyracer. I want to release as many records as Boyracer did. I want to do something as important as Boyracer did. I be a part of something as amazing as Boyracer was. I want to be in Boyracer. I’ll play anything.

Passionflower

Passionflower – Boyracer

As much as the focal point of Boyracer is the noise they can make with guitar, it’s the bass lines that make a lot of the songs. And this one is one of their more pretty. Especially at that turn around point. Three falling notes – dum da-dum. Very nice. One of the greatest bands to ever have existed.

I listened to everything i have of theirs driving down to my mother’s house yesterday. Or at least tried to. There’s so much of it. Anyway, her passionfruit vine up and died so no more Coles scams for me.

Black fantastic spitting – Boyracer

…is today’s song. I love the drum beat in this. It is like some supremely concentrated and formulated thing, at once appropriate and odd, and adds so much to the song. Those cymbal placements, the snare roll, the deviant way it loops, how it compliments the bass perfectly. It’s one of those beats so perfect, so fitting, so simple and so obvious, but put anyone in a room with a drum kit and a drumless version of this song and they’re not ever going to come up with something as good.

He gets me so hard – Boyracer

If i were ever able to choose the song that makes me deaf, it would be this one. That it would be the last thing i ever heard, my eardrums blowing out halfway through one of those layered riffs at the end, would be the best farewell to hearing i could imagine. That there are so many unnatural, unrecommended, piercing sounds, increasingly piled up on top of each other, each more likely to dismay your local audiologist than the last, coupled with the volume I HAVE TO listen to this song, this may very well be the last song i ever hear. I think it broke my girlfriend’s headphones, if you wanted any testimony.

Dark Wing

Dark wing – Boyracer

Because i have nothing better to do, i spend much of my internet time reading the archived posts on the indiepop mailing list. Fifteen years of people dropping in and out, buying and selling things, arguing, defending, being enthusiastic, being petty, being clueless, being cluey, dead links, but above all talking about and preserving talk of bands who only ever make the smallest of blips. It is history. It is framing, illuminating history. And it’s fascinating (to me).

So delving back into this past, amongst talk that was once current and instant, not shaped by what was to come only by what was, i often come across some perturbing things. For one: Boyracer were absolutely reviled back then. There were some defenders, but the majority opinion held in this little scene (or those with internet access and care enough to send an email about it) was that this little band i would call one of my favourites was a source of aggravation and disdain for a lot of people.

Maybe it’s because they were on Sarah Records, ruining sensibilities and expectations all the way. People really took offense to Boyracer. People on the list really don’t, or at least used to not, realise indiepop is a punk rock as much as any other, harsher sounding punk rock. Where it came from, philosophy, intent – it is nothing but. Obscuring perfect pop songs with distortion and feedback is a bit much for some people, i suppose. Who am i? Yelling at people fifteen years in the past over something best left fifteen years in the past. The things you get riled up on if you have enough time.
