Will he kiss me tonight? – Dolly Mixture
There is no greater proof and product of the supreme condition that bands should be left to themselves than Dolly Mixture’s Demonstration Tapes compilation. Everything of the band they wanted to be was captured here: a loose collection of songs of direct influence and efficacy that exists for the sole grace of “every now and then we have gone into a studio and recorded a fresh batch of songs, just to see what they sounded like on tape.” It is something completely missing from the singles, especially their first (which they disowned) where they were shaped into someone’s educated guess of something that would look right and sell. Here, tape warbling and blow out intact, is perhaps the greatest offering to the girl group sound, and every wonderful thing it has ever breathed life into and meant to people, ever made.
